42. “Attunement” and ap-propriation
This word is not to be understood in the usual way, from the human being and his introspective state, but rather away from the human being—as finding-oneself in beings as such and as a whole.
How to find oneself in this in-between—perhaps as lost.
Understood in this way, attunement [Stimmung] is tantamount to attunedness [Gestimmtheit].
But attunedness itself is what essentially determines and attunes, that which essentially occurs through attunement and out of attunement.
But attunement is properly the ap-propriation of the human being into the in-between and thus reappropriation into what is nearest and most concealed—Da-sein.
Attunement [Stimmung] is the voice [Stimme] of beyng; it is beyng as appropriation into silence.
43. Anxiety—un-settlement—thrownness
“Anxiety” is at first only the preliminary name for shock, and this shock conceals dread, which holds in itself the un-settling.
The un-settling essentially occurs from out of un-settlement. Beings are relieved of the pretense to “be” themselves, and to “be” on the basis of themselves, and “to be” at all. The un-settlement is the a-byssal grounding of the inbetween—(the throwing into the clearing of beyng).
The throwing grounds thrownness—that a human community can find itself in the open realm of what is first to be grounded, into which first appears what can then be called “beings”.
Anxiety is an attunement—an ap-propriation in the essence of un-settlement.

44. Being and attunement
If one were of the opinion that Being must not be thought as a pure concept (logically), but rather that it must be felt for its feeling, then with this, nothing is really being asked at all.
In this way, metaphysics reaches only into the shallows of “rationalism.” +) And this rationalism must degenerate into its counter-play (irrationalism).
The intent of referring to attunement (anxiety) is not any of that, but rather to bring to experience that beyng itself tunes and attunes and that beyng itself, in pure nearness, is simple clarity for the truthful thinking of beyng.
